Teamwork wins bass tournaments
BOCA RATON — — One of the keys behind the bass tournament success enjoyed by Jon Farmer and Mark Sommer is they never start off fishing with the same lures.
That's why Farmer was casting a plastic frog and Sommer a swimbait as the sun rose over the flats at the south end of Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
Later, while fishing in a canal, Sommer threw a Zara Spook and Farmer used a Gambler EZ Swimmer. The topwater plug produced the biggest bass of the day while Farmer's swimbait caught several smaller fish.
That's what the reigning Kings of the Glades are after in tournaments this time of year: One good fish, then four smaller ones to fill out their five-fish limit.
Given the tough fishing conditions — sunny skies and no wind — it was a pretty good day, especially compared with the struggles of other anglers who spoke with Farmer and Sommer.
